EXCLUSIVE: House Republicans call on Congress to cancel PPP loans to Planned Parenthood
A group of dozens of House Republicans led by New York Rep. Claudia Tenney calls on the House Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government to cancel tens of millions of dollars in Check Protection Program loans payroll (PPP) to Planned Parenthood (PPFA), the Daily Caller has learned.
Republican lawmakers allege the Small Business Administration (SBA) violated President Joe Biden’s coronavirus relief program guidelines by providing $65,395,339 in PPP loans to 34 Planned Parenthood Federation of America affiliates in its budget for fiscal year 2023, according to a letter first obtained by the daily caller.
Planned Parenthood affiliates include various state and local nonprofit organizations, offices, and clinics across the country. According to Tenney, PPFA affiliates are under the control of the national organization, which means they should not be eligible for PPP loan forgiveness.
Tenney, along with 68 additional co-signers, points to the fact that PPP loans were only to be issued and canceled for entities with fewer than 500 employees across all affiliated entities, a qualifier Planned Parenthood does not meet. However, more than $81 million in PPP loans have been issued to 46 Planned Parenthood affiliates nationwide, and 34 of those affiliates have had their loans forgiven, according to the letter.
Lawmakers allege the SBA promised to correct the error but failed to do so, forcing Congress to step in and fix the problem. (RELATED: EXCLUSIVE: SBA hid communications with Planned Parenthood amid GOP criticism of PPP loans)
“Congress writes the laws, and federal agencies like the SBA are bound by them. I am appalled at the SBA’s lack of transparency and accountability for knowingly breaking the law,” Rep. Tenney told The Daily Caller. “As a result, I urge my colleagues on the Appropriations Committee to withhold funding from the SBA’s Executive Discretionary Account for fiscal year 2023 equal to the amount of illegally canceled loans for Planned Parenthood Affiliates. The American people strongly oppose to taxpayer-funded abortions, and he deserves better than that.
“As per PPP guidelines, entities that applied and were found eligible received loans. Entities deemed eligible for PPP forgiveness under PPP guidelines have been forgiven of these loans,” a senior SBA official told The Daily Caller.
Republican members of Congress have taken numerous actions in an attempt to block Planned Parenthood from receiving COVID-19 relief funds. However, the Biden administration and congressional Democrats have thwarted many of these efforts.
PPFA did not respond to a Daily Caller request for comment.
